Description
Designs, develops, directs, and coordinates the engineering of company products through the consideration of all aspects of a product's use including visual appeal, safety, accessibility, and affordability. Evaluates user feedback to adjust and improve overall product appeal. Uses scientific processes and mathematical concepts to create innovative solutions to common problems. Collaborates with other engineers, tool makers, customer service, marketing, and production personnel to finalize the specifications of a product. Prepares clear, complete, and accurate assembly and detail CAD mechanical engineering drawings and models. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and proficiency in both 2D and 3D CAD software are essential for success in this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned:
- Analyze product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.
- Determine feasibility of designing new products or modifying existing products considering costs, manufacturing capability, and other technical and economic factors.
- Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements, and related specifications.
- Evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Prepare or direct preparation of product and detailed drawings and schematics.
- Direct and coordinate manufacturing of prototype product.
- Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified product.
- Plan and develop experimental test programs.
- Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
- Provide product application and technical assistance to the quotations group, customers, customer service and the sales force.
- Provide technical and product training as necessary to customers and sales force on all products to assist in optimizing sales and customer satisfaction.
- Assist in developing support documents such as product catalog, sales brochures, and operating manuals.
- Generate detailed assembly and instruction manuals, schematics, and exploded views.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be detail-oriented, have leadership qualities, be self-motivated and able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Four-year Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent Engineering Degree from a NAIT or ABET accredited university. Advanced design skills required. ANSI/ASME Y14 drafting standard knowledge required. A minimum of three years' experience as a design engineer in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Experience or knowledge of sand casting, permanent mold casting, investment casting, machining, and plastic injection molding manufacturing methods, preferred.
COMPUTER SKILLS: AutoCad, SolidWorks and 3D printer experience required.Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Teams, and Internet technologies. Preference given to applicants with experience using advanced ERP systems, specifically Epicor.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Effective communication skills required.Ability to read, write, and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to communicate in person, through e-mail, phone, chat and video conference required.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must possess product focused creative thinking.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must be detail-oriented and possess good project management skills and excellent time management and prioritization skills.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: There are no certificates, licenses, or registrations required. SolidWorks certification, Auto Cad certifications, and lean certifications highly recommended. Professional engineer preferred.
